November (and December) scent!

Hi there, babycakes!

I've chosen the scent for November and it will run through December 20th (when I take the rest of the month off for Christmas!).

Candy Cane!

This is a peppermint-only scent, NOT the same as the Mint Blend (which is a blend of 4 different mint oils)!

I am also brainstorming new names for the Honey Hold since MANY people are saying how wonderful it is on their rough heels, elbows, cuticles, etc! It's not just for holding braids and twists! If you have a great idea, please leave it in the comments section for me!

Babycakes: Lip Butter continues to be HUGELY popular but especially now, heading into winter! Stock up with your next order so you don't run out!

Thank you everyone for your continued support! It's such a blessing to my family!!

Adoption Update: Our dossier should be in Ethiopia any moment now, and then it begins it's translation in-country before being submitted to the courts so we can wait for a court appointment date! Praying we can still MAYBE get a court date in December... but that's a VERY LONG long-shot!

Babycakes: Honey Butter

Babycakes friends!

I've decided to sell the holding "wax" I make
for those who are looking for an all-natural alternative
to store-bought braid and twist gels.

It's made with raw cocoa butter, natural beeswax, and an oil blend.
I don't scent the Honey Butter...
its natural scent is pleasant and doesn't linger.

I use it for braids, twists, any kind of flat-twist/braid and for re-curling the little pieces at the hairline
that I don't force into the style.

It's also great for super dry knees, elbows and heels!
It has healed my peeling cuticles like a miracle!!

(It's not meant to be an all over moisturizer like Babycakes: Hair and Body Butter
since it contains higher levels of solids that don't absorb quickly.)

An 8 ounce jar is $18
and I hope to be shipping by
Oct. 13th!

Lots of love, dear Babycakes friends!

October!

Happy Fall everyone!
It's in the air here - leaves turning fiery red, cool nights, dark outside by dinner time...
Before we know it, we will be in the super busy holiday season!!

I asked on my facebook page for some scent suggestions for October,
and the general consensus was that it should be something pumpkin/spice/fall like.

Well... I went to the health food store... looked around...
and didn't really find anything I thought I would want near my babycakes sweet faces.
Cinnamon oil can be really irritating to the soft tissues, clove oil numbs, and there was no pumpkin oil (well, there's pumpkin seed oil... but that's an actual oil, not an essential oil.)

SO.
After further deliberation,
I went with an actual soap/lotion scenting blend from the craft store.
This isn't organic...
but I only use a few drops per jar.

I found....

Cinnamon Spice!

It's not too "loud" and I think it has just the right blend of scents to make it fall-ish, but not smell like someone made a wreath out of those scented pinecones at the front of the store!

Also...
I have changed the style of my 8 ounce jars!!
I know it's hard to get the last bit out of those tall skinny jars...
so now, I'm using a short, fat jar instead!
I think they are adorable!!
Old style center-top, new style lower left!

It may take me a few days to get your orders out...
I'm waiting on another shipment of butters so I can whip up a new batch!
I do have 6 (8oz) jars of natural scent in stock though... so I can ship that today!

Happy Fall, babycakes!!

September scent!

Well, babycakes...
my supplies are finally on their way to my home and should be here by the weekend!

I will begin making and shipping more Babycakes by the middle of next week (barring any unforeseen drama... like the humidity that plagued my whipped yumminess last month!)

As for a scent for September, it's been a tough call! The recent scents have been popular and many folks are asking for a repeat from a recent month...

So September will again be the Mint Blend!
It's a lovely combination of Spearmint, Peppermint and a touch of rosemary and tea tree!
It's my personal favorite for my own use (after shower, before bed, by the sink in the kitchen).

Unscented/Natural is ALWAYS available and competes with the mint blend for the #1 seller!

Thank you all for your patience as I have struggled to fill orders recently!
Our lives will (hopefully) settle down now that school is well in session and almost everything that moves in our house has been broken and repaired recently! :)

As a side note, business related, after having kept track of my cost for ingredients and shipping, shipping supplies, cost of jars etc... I have realized that my actual proceeds from the time I put into creating my babycakes isn't quite what I need for it to be in order to make it worth the time I spend away from my family. I have increased the price slightly to cover increased costs, and I hope that does not deter anyone from ordering -but totally understand if so and I apologize that I am unable to offer it for a lower cost. The ingredients could be cheaper if I were willing to go with conventional oils and butters instead of organic, fair-trade... but I want to be sure I am using the highest quality ingredients available for my own babycakes, and for yours!

Blessings to all my sweet supportive babycakes friends...
I'm so thankful for your kind words, re-orders and referrals!

Two parts to the hair issue

Hello babycakes friends!
This is for my friends with sweet brown babies, or those waiting to bring them home...
there are two distinct different issues to deal with when caring for kinky, curly hair.
Moisture and Detangling.

Do not confuse the two.
They are not the same issue.

Moisturizers add moisture (well, duh...), add necessary oils back to the hair and help keep the hair healthy so that it breaks less.
Detanglers are purely to help you get knots out, part hair for styles, and comb through to smooth it while detangling for styles.

Many times I hear friends say that their babycakes isn't doing anything to get tangles out.
Well, it isn't supposed to! It's for moisture. It helps heal dry hair cuticles, helps keep the scalp moisturized and contains specific butters and oils that repair damaged cells and tissues.

I am working on a detangler and once I get it to the place where it's a truly great product and not just "good for all-natural"... it will debut on this site!

Until then, I use the intense conditioner found in the boxes of hair coloring packages as a detangler in a pinch. It works great on my daughter with the tightest curl that is the most easily tangled up. I use a deep conditioner and let it sit, then rinse it out and use cheap conditioner and water to help comb through the hair. You will use WAY more than you ever would think is necessary for conditioner. It's okay... don't worry! :)

I use my fingers to detangle before I ever pick up a comb or brush OR the tangle teezer.

Some tiny knots are caused by dead shed hair getting twisted around the ends of other healthy hair. If I can't pull these out I may snip off the ends of that hair to keep it from getting broken higher up, or pulling out at the root during combing.

Go slowly, take your time, and don't be afraid to do this in stages!
Add moisture before and after detangling and certainly before doing any kind of style!
Really slather on your babycakes to each section of hair when braiding - you will be amazed at how healthy the hair still looks once you take down the braids WEEKS later!

Don't be afraid to ask for help! Leave a comment here, go over to Happy Girl Hair and read up on techniques or join a facebook page like Chocolate Hair/ Vanilla Care and ask some questions.

September scent coming soon...
still waiting on my ingredients to arrive at casa de babycakes!
I think I have a scent chosen, but if you have a preference - please leave a comment!

Orders on hold for August...

Hey babycakes friends...
I have had a run on babycakes this month and the giant order I just placed for supplies is GONE!
It's a good problem for me to have, but I'm going to have to pause ordering for the remainder of this month until my supplies come in, then I will start making more!

Thank you all for your loyalty and your re-orders!
It means so much that you love my babycakes as much as we do!

If you want to order and just wait till it comes in and is ready, feel free to do that, but know it may be 2-3 weeks before it arrives at your home!
Thanks, babycakes!

It's August, babycakes!

It's back-to-school time here...
yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far and also the hottest August 3rd on record!
It was also our Family Day - we arrived home from Ethiopia with our 3 babies a year ago last night!

Now for the some updates and scent-of-the-month info!
  • I had several requests for a repeat of Lavender for August, but...I've been working on making my own essential oil out of basil and rosemary. It's been "brewing" for several weeks now and it's looking great! Therefore... I am going to do TWO for August!
          1. Lavender
          2. Summer herb!
Please be sure to specify which scent you would like when you place your order!
There is a "notes to seller" section on paypal that you can write whatever you like!
Thank you, babycakes! It will help keep me sane!

  • Babylips is selling out every time I make a new batch! If you have not tried it yet, it is SUPER popular locally so you may want to add one to your next order! I have one lady who buys 10 at a time!

  • Be patient with me on your orders this month... I am sending my baby girls off to Kindergarten and their schedule is a little insane with the "staggered start" our district does! I will get it to you as soon as I possibly can, but let me know if there is a rush!

  • Check the ingredients here on the blog, but I will begin including ingredients lists with your order. I have added hemp oil as well as a couple of other healing oils to my blend recently!

  • You may notice up in the browser title... I bought my very own domain name! www.lovemybabycakes.com! Share the love, tell a friend!
Happy August, babycakes!

July!

Happy July, babycakes!
I hope everyone is having a nice summer so far!
The scent-of-the-month for July is a minty combo of peppermint and spearmint!
It's cooling and lightly scented, making it (at least *I* think so) a nice choice for hot summer nights!

Some other summer housekeeping...
It's hot out there, babycakes.
Like REALLY hot.
Drippy, outside-kid-smell hot.
I do my best to take these packages to the post office late in the day on Monday or Tuesdays only, that way they get sorted immediately and go out that night, and shipping priority, get to you in 3 days or less.
But that's still three days.
In the drippy, outside-kid-smell heat.
I am letting you know, your babycakes may melt.
Mine did.
Of course I left it on the deck...
but that's another story.

Here are your choices when that happens:
1. Use it solid. It's harder to scoop out, but it melts in your hands like always.
2. Pour the melted stuff into a small bowl and whip with a hand mixer, then scoop it back into the jar! There is always some stuck in the bowl and stuck to the beaters, so line up the kids and lotion them up from the bowl!

On another note...
Yes, it's true!
I'm experimenting with some additional products! Yay!
I've made two versions of a detangler, two versions of a light-hold gel, and I'm working on a body wash... all natural, all highest-quality ingredients I can find.
Here's my thing.
I don't want the products to be "really good... for all-natural!"
I want them to be really good for ANY comparison purposes!
Right now, I think we are at the "...for all-natural" level.
I will let you know what I think after this weekend...
I have several local families testing my 4 current samples and taking notes for me on what works, what they like and don't like, etc.

While I'm at it...
any other products you'd like to have?

Stay cool, babycakes!

June scent and other love for my babycakes friends!

Well, babycakes... where has the year gone??
It's nearly half done already, can you believe it?
Here in Tennessee we are up to our knees in the 13-year Cicadas (think Biblical plague), heat, humidity, and kids home for the summer!

I asked a few friends on facebook to chime in and vote on their favorite scent idea for June and overwhelmingly the #1 request was for a "Mounds candy bar" or Coconut/Chocolate scent!
So... I have acquired a delicious organic black coconut scented oil which I am using to enhance the natural coconut scent and the cocoa (as always) comes from the cocoa butter!

Now, babycakes.
We need to chat for a sec.
When I created my hair and body butter, its original intent was to be something for the whole family to use.
Me, with my wheat/gluten thing...the littles with their gorgeous brown skin and dark black thirsty hair, my 13 year old daughter for her rough heels and itchy patches of skin, it even works to heal minor skin abrasions!
What it's NOT is a scented body lotion ala Body Sh0p or Bath&Body W0rks. Get the drift?
I personally LOVE a good coconut lime body lotion as much as the next gal, but I don't want my baby boy smelling like the 13 year old at the mall either.

This isn't meant to be a long lasting, this-is-my-scent-today kind of lotion.
It is MILD.
MILDLY scented.
You will love it coming out of the jar, your kids will think you are rubbing them with a melted candy bar, but you will not attract hungry passers by.

While I've got your ear (eyes?)...

Dearest babycakes, you are more than welcome to purchase the same oils and butters from your local health food store, online purveyor, or wherever you can attain such products, melt them together in whatever ratios you like, and make your own hair and body butters. You can make your own lip butter. Surely, if I can make this with 7 kids running around... you can do it too. However, I have many batches of not-awesome body butter at my family's disposal from  my trial runs. It's not cheap.
But please, don't ask for my formula/ratio/ingredients other than the list of what is here on the blog.
Babycakes helps me bring the ends closer together for this larger-than-average family. It helps me with birthdays and anniversaries, and it helps me donate to adoptions and family preservation programs all over the world that are near and dear to my heart. If you want to just make it yourself, that's great and I wish you well... but please don't ask for my help then decide to be my competition.

With much love to my fabulous, well-moisturized, yummy-scented friends out there!
Happy June!

May!

Welcome new babycakes friends!
Seasons are changing! Around here we have 4 seasons: ice, tornado, mosquito, and lovely!
(Lovely= fall...ahhh I love fall!!)
We are full into "tornado season" here in TN!
Since the humidity is rising, I thought something nice and summery would be good...
So May is orange babycakes! Yay!

(Babylips/lip butter is still peppermint!)

Keep in mind I use cocoa butter and coconut oil as the top two butters in babycakes... so you will also smell the cocoa and coconut undertones. I could use refined oils/butters to get rid of the scents...but that wouldn't be true to the babycakes way of doing things, friends!

It's a light orange scent...you won't smell like you spilled your juice in your child's hair or anything!

Please be patient as I am making more all the time and I can only ship Mon-Wed with melting fears in shipping.... and it may take a few days to a week to get it out the door!
(and if you bug me about it, I will pull the 'I have SEVEN children" card. Don't make me go there. It isn't pretty!)

Happy May, babycakes!

ps- remember the new babylips/babycakes lip butter is also available! $2.50 added to any order!

babycakes lip butter!

Okay babycakes fans...
by popular demand...it's here!
babycakes lip butter! (or, babylips for short!)

Now...you can only order it with a body butter order (unless you want like 10 of them...then just send me a message!)

It's lovely.
More solid like c@rmex in a little jar, but light enough for anytime!
It stays on for a long time and just like everything else...
it's made from food-grade butters and pure beeswax!
Currently, only peppermint scent is available.

$2.50 per tub (7cc / 1.5" tall)

As always, thanks again to all my babycakes friends for ordering and sharing your babycakes love with your friends!

April scent...Lavender!

Well, hi there, babycakes!

Are you ready for spring?

I sure am!

The Scent-of-the-month for April is Lavender!
I think you will love it!
It's great for night-time baby massage (even if your baby is a big, tough man!) or after-shaving moisture!

As with the other scents... this isn't a perfume. You won't notice the scent hours later, so don't worry about using it during the day or with other scents!

As always, natural/unscented is available too!

Happy Spring, babycakes!

April scent coming soon!

Hello, babycakes!

April is almost here and with it... a new babycakes scent!

I'm not letting you in on it just yet... but I think it will nice and "ahhhh... spring!"

Orders placed from March 17th-27th will ship on Monday, March 28!

Priority Shipping takes 3 days and I am going to ONLY ship orders on Monday or Tuesday so that they do not sit on hot USPS trucks over the weekend!

Have a great week, friends!

Thursday, March 17, 2011

Babycakes away!

Thank you so much to all of you who ordered the very first batch of babycakes!

Due to some confusion about how to package the orders up and actually get them physically shipped...
and making a fresh batch of babycakes body butter to fill orders...the orders will all be shipped tomorrow!
They are shipping priority mail, so you should expect to get your order by Tuesday!

Another note:
I will begin having unscented/natural scent always available!
Now, if you are an "unscented person"...this is going to have a scent!
The butters and oils I use have a naturally occurring scent (cocoa butter smells like chocolate! coconut oil smells like coconut!) and those things blend together to give it the scent you will notice when you open your jar! Don't expect to not smell anything... which is why I labeled them as "unscented/natural scent".

Flavor-of-the-month!
I have decided that instead of trying to fill individual scent orders (chaos/confusion/headaches), I decided I would have a "flavor-of-the-month" instead! Yay!
March was Peppermint Patty (or Thin Mint... however you want to think of it!)
April... well, I'm working on that one! I will announce it soon though!

A very sincere THANK YOU to everyone who ordered over the past week!
You all blew me away!
I can't wait to hear what you think when you get your order!

Welcome!

My name is Chrissy. My husband and I have seven babycakes, three of whom were adopted from Ethiopia in 2010!

With my own allergies and my desire to use natural products on our bodies, I developed a blend that I love for me, as well as for my babycakes' hair and skin!

What I developed worked so well, I wanted to share it with my friends, neighbors and other trans-racial families out there who are looking for something thats all-natural and still affordable!

** A note on prices and shipping**
I have adjusted the price to include free shipping. After speaking with a few friends, they would prefer to pay $13 or $21 and get free shipping than have a price + shipping option. If you need to speak with me about this, leave your email in the comments and I am happy to discuss it with you!
OR - if you live in the middle Tennessee area and would like to pick it up here, I am happy to arrange that with you and that particular pricing option is on the pull down ordering menu as well!

I hope you enjoy looking around! Click on the different tabs at the top to learn more about babycakes, more about me, what's in my body butter, and why I think it's the best thing you can put in your hair or on your body!

Blessings!
~Chrissy
